I Think I Kinda You Know that You Don't Know

Welcome back my couch potatoes! I've been in a pretty good mood recently so I'm starting to write my blog a little earlier that usual. (What!? I didn't wait until 10pm the night before it was due? What kind of sorcery is this??) Well, honestly it's because I don't want my homework to stack up and I won't have time to read my book, for the Sci-fi unit, which I'm actually enjoying.

But let me update you a bit more on my college audition journey... I'm done with the whole audition process. (Well, with the all the live audition ones. I still have to do one video audition.) I just have to wait to hear back from them. But I'm so glad that's over. No more stress and anxiety. No more long car rides. No more dressing up and doing my make up—but that also means no more eating at nice restaurants whenever we can and not feeling guilty about it :( But that does mean that my weekends are free! I can finally hang out with friends, watch TV, read, write music, do whatever I want to do... that's a lie, weekends are probably going to be dedicated to doing homework. (I don't think Senioritis is ever going to hit me).

But in the current free time I have, I did arrange something, which is what I am dedicating this post about. I will be teaching y'all some simple music theory as I go through the process of how I did this. So let's get started!

As you all know, I've kind of been obsessing with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (HSMTMTS for short) where I have basically been listening to the soundtrack with a few other songs on repeat. One of my favorites is "I Think I Kinda You Know", and it kind of reminded me of another song that I was obsessed with a few years ago "Can't Blame a Girl for Trying" by Sabrina Carpenter. So I found my guitar song book, where my guitar teacher and I notate songs by listening to them and sure enough, the songs were in the same key. They also followed pretty much same chord progression... coincidence?! Actually no but I'll get into that in another future post.

Since the songs are in the same key, it made this arranging process a lot simpler. BUT WAIT! I keep saying this word "key" like that thing that opens doors or starts a car, but that is not the definition when it comes to music. The key of a song refers to how the pitches are arranged, making a certain note feel like the center of the song or "home" as many people refer to it as and setting the tone of the song. For these two particular songs, they are in the key of C Major, making it feel as the song revolves around the pitch C and giving it a brighter and happier song, as opposed to one of my compositions, "Again..." which has a minor tonality and revolves around the pitch G for the most part.

Regardless of keys, most songs today use the following chords—I, IV, V, vi, and in pop music iii. The numerical value of the roman numerals tell you which pitch is the root of the chord or in other words, which chord it is. In the key of C Major, the pitches are C, D, E, F, G, A, B and are number 17 respectively. The upper and lower case of the roman numerals tell you if the quality of the chord—Major (uppercase) or minor (lowercase). Therefore, the I chord in the key of C Major is C major... That's a bad example. Chord V of the key C Major is G major and the chord vi of the key C Major is A minor.

I fear that this post will have to much music theory thrown at you guys at once that you won't be able to follow so I will be making a part two! However, the information above is the main reason why I chose to do an arrangement of two songs. It is still possible to arrange any two song mash-up regardless of the key they are written in, but that involves a good ear and a lot of music theory to notate and to do it properly.

Until next time my couch potatoes. Look, listen, and lay low.

If this is love... it's NOT easy

Welcome back my couch potatoes! It's been a while since my last post so let me catch you up a bit on my personal life.

I've been doing college auditions nonstop! I literally have one every weekend since the second week of January, and of course, being me who is really just sick and tired of this place, decided to apply to only out of state schools. So road trips lots of road trips and overnight stays for me! Honestly though it's getting easier and easier as they go on. I don't really get that nervous anymore (*knock on wood*; *tocca ferro*). I have been busy busy busy between current school work and college but I made sure to make time for a little song writing to share with my couch potatoes to keep this interesting. Here are the lyrics of a chorus of a potential song:

I close my eyes feel the air rushing around me
I hear the truth, the silence consoles to
As everything lies still, the chaos starts to build
With my head held high, I take a sigh
'Cause my time is here

This part is in F major (if any of you are wondering) and I'm too self conscious to put a video of me singing so this will have to do. But let me get to what I wanted to share with y'all today.

I feel that Valentine's Day is such a commercialized holiday, but still very important to have every year. I think that this day forces you to let the people you love know that you love, care, and appreciate them. Because I know, that sometimes it's hard to show it or say it or even just make time to do either of those things. Honestly, Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays because I'm a big advocate for relationships, and I think this holiday helps strengthen all sorts of relationship, not just romantic ones. I, for one, will be single this Valentine's Day (possibly, I never know 😉) but there's still a ton to do with other loved ones like your friends or even your siblings (don't bother your parents... they should be alone with each other... if they are still together... I'll stop typing now). So here are some date ideas to do this Valentine's Day, which can really be done with anyone!

1. Watch a movie

The classic movie date. Where you can watch a rom-com or be weird like me and watch Gotham instead. Really pick any thing to watch, what ever you and your date are in the mood for. And if you want to go out, you can take it step further like Mr. Eric Matthews from Boy Meets World and do a "dinner-movie, movie-dinner, dinner-movie, movie-dinner" *walks into a fence*. So a dinner before the movie, movie during dinner, or dinner after the movie are all options. Or instead of going out, you can stay in and just watch on your tv, laptop, projector and get comfy! Honestly, the options are endless.
And if you're having trouble picking a movie, some good one are:

Romance Stuff:
Kissing Booth
To All the Boys I Loved Before
To All the Boys P.S. I Still Love You (coming out Wed.)
After
Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List
Crazy Rich Asians

Classics:
50 First Dates
10 things I Hate About You
Breakfast Bunch
16 Candles
She's the Man

Other:
Anything Disney tbh
Little Women (highly recommend watching)

2. Carpool Karaoke

You don't have to be good to enjoy singing. Honestly, it's more fun everyone tries to sound bad. From past experience, singing brought me closer to my loved ones. I think it really shows a hidden part of you that not many people know about. So for this Valentine's Day make a playlist, find a date or grab a couple of friends and sign your heart out to One Direction or Aretha Franklin. Or create a playlist of a bunch of duets to sing with the special someone (I'm gonna cry because I loved singing duets with my past bf😢). Or better yet just make a playlist for you to sing to them (I like this one even more). That's why I love music so much, because you can show so many different emotions through song. So drive around aimlessly, (but still on the road) and sing your hearts out! Here's a wide variety of love related songs. It's a playlist I made long ago when I was in the feels but I kept it up to date.
(Note: only do this if the one driving has a license and a car that is allowed to be used)

3. Dancing

I'm literally giving you guys all the date ideas I did with my past bf... lol. Anyway, I think of dancing the same thing as singing... the fact that it lets you share something hidden with another person. Make a playlist and dance like no bodies watching with your friends. Or if you're with that special someone, look up how to waltz or whatever, or just slow dance to that special song. Or create a playlist just for the two of you to dance together and look into each others' eyes. Dancing brings people together through physical touch which what makes dancing and singing different in my opinion. But still, dancing is a great way to spend time together.

Of course there are more ideas, but these are some that I would like to share with you guys. I wanted to do something different than the reviews and playlists I give you guys. I hope you all have a love-filled Valentine's Day.

Until next time my couch potatoes. Look, listen, and lay low.

It's the Start of Something New...

Welcome back my couch potatoes! And Happy New Year! Not really for me because almost every single second I have to myself is dedicated to practicing college auditions, which for start this Saturday (AAAHHHHHHHH!!!!) I'm so nervous! But my voice teacher said I have been doing very well and she can tell I've been practicing so that's good, right? Since I've been practicing so much I don't really have any new material to share with you guys :( Sad, I know. But here is one of my favorite songs that I've been working on for my college audition. It's an Italian ariette "Star Vicino" by Salvatore Rosa (1615-1673). The singer in the video is singing a slightly different arrangement and a different key that I sing. But it's still one of the most fun songs to sing.

The past week, when I would take break from college auditions or spending time with my family, I would go onto Disney Plus (which my mom bought recently thank God!) and watch High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. When I first saw the ad for it I was lowkey interested but was like "eh it's probably not going to be good". Well, I got to say, I really enjoy watching it. I'm not a huge fan of the Disney shows today, but this one's worth the watch. (btw Disney plus has the old shows from our childhood so I would try to get it, I definitely think it's worth it)

HSMTMTS I would say is a combination of The Office and Glee in the way that the show is formatted. This show has the characters talking to us at moments to let us know what they think, like The Office and singing to practice, perform, or just to express how they are feeling at the moment, just like they do in Glee.

I thought that the premise of the show was kinda cheesy but honestly the drama between the students and even the drama with the teacher Ms. Jenn is entertaining. What makes me very invested in the show is if I can relate to it, and for me, I can really relate to Nini, EJ, and Ricky. With HSM, I was hands down Gabriella with the stage fright, super smartness, having a big heart, and falling hard for a guy. And yes, I am basically a struggling actor trying make their big break in a high school musical production (haha see what I did there... okay...), but besides that, the drama that happens in that love triangle is something I can relate to A LOT. Like literally each of their problems with that girl or guy is something I struggle with to. And seeing them do things for that special someone are pretty crazy. I mean, I do some of those things so I must've look that stupid too. But hey, love makes us crazy.

The new music that has been written for this show is also very well done. I think that the songs reflect out time very well. For instance, the very well known "All I Want" (which is one of those songs on tiktok lol) is sung in the tone that everyone sings today but reminds me of other songs from the movies. This song in particular reminds me of the three songs Gabriella sings in each of the movies ("When There was Me and You"; "I Gotta Go my Own Way"; "Just Walk Away").

Last thing that I like about this show, which is very minor is Joshua Bassett. That's it... just him.

I hope you guys can find a chance to watch this show that also shows the lives of drama kids (which I think is very accurate to all the different scenarios).

Until next time my couch potatoes. Look, listen, and lay low.
